“Without Sight” is a photo documentary centered around blind individuals and families who are exploring the world through senses other than sight, adapting to everyday tasks, and living life to the fullest. The lives of these people suggest a deeper narrative about perception, experience, and resilience. They may not have sight, but they have vision.
In Bangladesh, blindness bears significant social challenges, especially for women who often encounter difficulties in everyday life. They face exclusion from employment and social activities, and finding a partner for marriage can be particularly challenging, as societal norms complicate relationships between blind and sighted individuals.
Globally, millions of people are blind or have significant low vision conditions, with many lacking access to proper education and employment opportunities. In Bangladesh, out of an estimated 750,000 blind individuals, only a small fraction receive education and find reliable employment. The educational system for the blind is inadequate, with limited resources and support, making it difficult for them to pursue higher education or secure meaningful employment.
The documentary follows the daily lives of individuals like Beli and Mukta, visually impaired university students, and Shajahan and Lipi, a married couple who have defied societal expectations by completing their studies and embarking on their careers. Despite the challenges they face, they remain determined to achieve their dreams and be seen as equals in society. Additionally, Shajahan and Lipi’s journey includes the adoption of two children, a girl and a boy, who do not have visual impairments. Alongside raising their children, they also provide care for Lipi’s mother, who is a retired teacher, demonstrating their commitment to family and their ability to navigate the complexities of life with grace and determination. Through their stories, “Without Sight” highlights the resilience and strength of the human spirit, inspiring us to see beyond physical limitations and embrace the capabilities and potential of every individual, regardless of sight.
